This Spiced Saffron Golden Milk is always my go-to when I've had a long, busy day and am in need of a good night's sleep. It really does the trick! It's a family recipe that has been passed down through the generations, originally stemming from my great grandmother in India - just with a few personal touches.
It's made up of clean, healthy ingredients - all of which serve multiple health benefits, making it a great replacement to your evening cup of tea or coffee. The almonds are the secret ingredient that give this drink its sleep-enhancing properties, as they are full of melatonin and magnesium, which help to promote a long and restorative night's sleep. It's also anti-inflammatory, high in antioxidants and can help to stabilise blood sugar! What's not to love?
Spiced Saffron Golden Milk (DF, VE, V)
Serves: 2
Prep time: 5 minutes
Total time: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS
2 cups almond milk, or your preferred choice of milk
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp turmeric
Pinch of nutmeg
Pinch of saffron
Small amount of jaggery or blackstrap molasses for sweetness (honey is also fine)
20 almonds, finely chopped
METHOD
1. Over a low heat, heat the milk up in a saucepan. When warm, add in the rest of the ingredients, apart from the almonds, and leave to simmer for 5-6 minutes. It should be nice and yellow in colour.
2. Remove from the heat, transfer to a blender and blend at a high speed for a few seconds until the milk becomes frothy.
3. Upon serving, add the almonds into the mugs and stir well.
